As per the news updates during mid night of 9th jan-2017,Petrol pumps across the country have said they will accept credit or debit cards for now, deferring an earlier decision that followed banks announcing a fee on these transactions.
The petrol pumps' protest against the charge was postponed till January 13 after a late night-intervention by the government which, sources said, assured that the contentious merchant discount rate or MDR fee won't be applied till that day. The decision by fuel dealers could have hit the consumers as well the government's efforts to push cashless transactions amid a nationwide cash shortage following the scrapping of Rs. 500 and 1,000 rupee notes.
Cashless transactions have gone up at petrol pumps since the government's demonetization move announced on November 8. In December, the government had asked the banks to temporarily stop levying the transaction charges on debit card transactions.
This is an interim move by govt. to come out with a final call to look in the matter of MDR that is hampering the flow of cashless transactions.
